If a mine could scar these hallowed grounds, if an interstate could traverse the Shenandoah Valley, if development could forever alter the landscape of the region, what other threats could emerge in the years to come? As the 150th commemorations draw to a close, we must remain vigilant of our nation’s endangered battlefields and protect the legacy of the men who fought and died on these fields. We protect these places not only in honor of their legacy, but to honor all men and women who served this nation.
Although Cedar Creek is ranked among the most significant Civil War battlefields in the country, its status as one of the most threatened battlefields should serve as an alarm to preservationists everywhere.
